Doubling your independent consulting business isn’t about working harder or squeezing more work hours into your week.
It’s about changing how your business is designed and how decisions get made.
In this episode, Melisa Liberman shares a real-world example of a consultant who grew his business from $258K to over $514K in one year. This episode pulls back the curtain on what actually changed behind the scenes and why these shifts created momentum instead of burnout.
Melisa starts by walking through the consultant’s starting point. He was a fractional COO doing mostly execution-heavy work, juggling multiple clients, and hovering between $200K and $300K for several years. Revenue was directly tied to availability and effort, and growth felt risky because it seemed like it would require more stress and more hours.
The breakthrough came when the focus shifted away from effort and toward design.
The Five Shifts That Drove Growth
- Commitment to building a different business – He stopped negotiating his goal downward when things felt uncomfortable and committed to creating a $500K business, even when the path felt uncertain.
- Valuing capacity and setting a minimum floor – By doing the math on what his time needed to be worth to support a $500K business without working more, he created clearer pricing decisions and stopped accepting work that pulled him backward.
- Changing the business model to create leverage – He moved away from execution-heavy fractional work and toward advisory and strategy-based engagements, shifting his role from executor to trusted advisor.
- Normalizing higher revenue through quarterly targets – Instead of focusing on inconsistent monthly numbers, he anchored around $125K per quarter, making higher revenue feel repeatable and achievable.
- Refining how demand was created – Rather than adding more tactics, he doubled down on what was already working, including speaking events, which shortened his sales cycle and improved lead quality.
Melisa shares how these shifts led to predictable quarters, reduced volatility, and a new revenue set point that fundamentally changed how this consultant operated his business.
Why this Matters
Growth doesn’t happen by accident. It happens when commitment, capacity, business model, revenue targets, and demand creation all align. When they do, doubling your consulting business becomes a designed outcome instead of a hopeful stretch goal.
Tune into Episode 255 to learn what it really takes to move past a revenue plateau and build a consulting business that can grow without demanding more of your time.
